Resin Mold Making & Casting
Written by Aimee Eng

Molding and Casting Partsmold making intro

Polyurethane resin, polyester resin, Latex RTV rubber, Silicone RTV...

What does it all mean?

For casting we are using "polyurethane resin, and Silicone RTV for our molds.  Polyester resin is what we are using to fiberglass our boat hulls.  It is smelly and thick and slow to cure.  Polyester casting resin will also shrinks quite a bit as it cures.

We avoid all this by using "Polyurethane resin".   It is the ivory or white colored detail parts we are now using on our ships.  Tap Plastic's "Quick Cast" has a two to five minute working time and can be demolded in 18 to 60 minutes.

Latex RTV(room temperature vulcanizing) Rubber is one of many mold making materials available.  It has a limited lifespan and will eventually dry up and begin cracking and fall apart.

Silicone RTV is a much more durable mold material.  It is mixed by weight and cures overnight.  When the molds get thick this stuff stays flexible.
